Mindfulness for children in education

Image
Mindfulness can be described as a state of mind. Better yet there is evidence showing that mindfulness is a basic ability that anyone can practice. ‘Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Meditation begins and ends in the body. It involves taking the time to pay attention to where we are and what’s going on, and that starts with being aware of our body’ (Mindful Staff, 2014) Similarly, it is suggested that m indfulness is an ‘integrative, mind-body based approach that helps people to manage their thoughts and feelings and mental health’ (Mental Health Foundation, 2018) . Considering mental health is an ever-growing issue in today’s society, practicing mindful activities could really help to reduce the number of mental health cases. In addition to this, ‘mindfulness exercises are ways of paying attention to the present moment, using techniques like medi...

What is the value of creativity in primary education?

T here are many important aspects in primary education that involve creativity which show us the value of having it. According to Cambridge Dictionary (2018), creativity is the ability to produce original and unusual ideas , or to make something new or imaginative . NACCCE (1999) says that creativity always involves thinking or behaving imaginatively , this imaginative activity should be purposeful and generate something original . He also includes that ‘creativity is about fresh thinking’ ( Robinson, K. 2015). There is a great deal of debate about the term’s creativity, creative learning and creative education as they are often used in different contexts. Discussion of whether creativity can be taught at all as it is a natural capacity which is not easily developed through educatio...

The importance of childrens health and wellbeing

Children’s health and wellbeing is the foundation for them to achieve a successful future. The Foresight Report (2008), defines wellbeing as a ‘dynamic state, in which the individual is able to develop their potential, work productively and creatively, build strong and positive relationships with others, and contribute to their community. In addition to this, Nidirect (2018), says that emotional wellbeing is critical in developing a healthy successful school community, including developing a pupil's social, emotional and behavioural skills. Likewise, another source says that children’s wellbeing is influenced by a range of factors and includes their subjective feelings as well as social, physical and psychological aspects of their lives’ (Bowling, A., 2011). From this we can perceive a link from how one feeling and believes inside, can determine the future and sculpt something positive if their wellbeing is positive. ‘The Health and Wellbeing AoLE group recognises that good...

What is the purpose of education

Education is fundamental to development and growth. The human mind makes possible all development achievements through education (King, E. 2011). ACS Distance Education, (2018) says that effective education is a learning experience. Education brings about an inherent and permanent change in a person’s thinking and capacity to do things, which implies that being educated gives people different ways of thinking and more perspectives to be shared and discussed.   ‘Education is the engine of our economy, it is the foundation of our culture, and it’s an essential preparation for adult life’ (Department of Education, 2015). All these different and perceptions of education, show that it is put in place to better our futures and keep our economy and the world we live in going. Education is the key element that keeps society moving. Doumbia, K. (2013), explains in a blog post that education gives us a knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in u...
